Many schools and childcare centers have adopted
a no-holiday celebration policy, and the result is that many are devoid of
the usual sparkle and color that’s so welcome at this time of year. In
response to that, use this song to celebrate and bring back some of those
colors, but in a different way. Instructions are given for
ASL Signs
for the colors.
If you prefer, alternate lyrics using the traditional holidays of
Christmas and
Hanukkah
are given below.
An instrumental version of the song is provided,
so you can sing your own holiday, or just keep it a winter song.
SUGGESTION:
Have squares of paper or felt in the colors mentioned in the song. Go
through them and demonstrate the signs before singing the song. Then sign
the colors and other included words as you sing. To learn additional signs
for the optional lyrics, visit the ASL sites on our
LINKS page
ANOTHER VARIATION:
Add your own lyrics for other seasons, and use the colors. Sing to the
instrumental version!
The Colors of Winter
(signed words are in bold)
My winter coat is blue, my winter
scarf is red
My winter hat is green and it’s warm upon my head
CHORUS:
Oh the colors of winter are beautiful
to see
Oh the colors of winter are all around
me
The winter trees are green, the winter snow is white
The winter moon is yellow and it shines throughout the night
Our winter lights are red, our winter lights are blue
Our winter lights are orange, they're pink and
purple too

The Colors of Christmas
The Christmas tree is green, the Christmas snow
is white
The Christmas Star is yellow
and it shines throughout the night
Oh the colors of Christmas are beautiful to see
Oh the colors of Christmas are all around me
Our Christmas lights are red, our Christmas lights are blue
Our Christmas lights are orange,
They're pink and purple too

The Colors of Hanukkah
Our menorah is gold, it holds the candles white
Their yellow flame help to tell the story of the light
Oh the colors of Hanukkah are beautiful to see
Oh the colors of Hanukkah are all around me
My dreidel is red, my dreidel is blue
My dreidel is yellow, green and purple too
(repeat First verse, or add your own for the third)
CHORUS:
Oh the colors of Hanukkah are beautiful to see
Oh the colors of Hanukkah are all around me
