February 2nd is
Groundhog Day, and every year the famous groundhog named
Punxsutawney Phil predicts either six more weeks of winter or an
early spring. The town of
Punxsutanwney, Pennsylvania celebrates with a festival of
food and music. Children LOVE saying big words, so I’ve used
Phil’s name a lot in this song. Be sure to sing it slowly enough
for your children to sing along!
Here’s the story in case you don’t know it.
Every year on February 2nd, Punxsutawney Phil comes out of his
hole. If he sees his shadow, it means six more weeks of winter.
If he doesn’t, it means there will be an early spring. Since you
can only see your shadow when there is light, the weather would
have to be sunny. This is very confusing (you would think sun
would mean spring). So I wrote this song to help children learn,
and grownups remember!
Groundhog Day offers many topics for discussion! Shadows,
seasons, groundhogs, and traditions. As always, my favorite
website to go to for information and fun activities to use with
my songs is
www.EnchantedLearning.com. There you can find crafts,
literacy activities, and more information.
Punxsutawney
Phil (Groundhog Day)
Punxsutawney Phil, Punxsutawney Phil
Come on out of your home on the hill
Tell us if you see your shadow then we’ll have to sing
It’s six more weeks of winter, not an early spring.
Punxsutawney Phil, Punxsutawney Phil
Come on out of your home on the hill
If you don’t see your shadow we’ll be happy to sing
Bye, bye, winter, we’ll have an early spring.
You have to have sun to make a shadow
So we really hope you see a cloudy day
Although it might seem funny but if it’s sunny
Then winter weather’s gonna stay.
Punxsutawney Phil, Punxsutawney Phil
Come on out of your home on the hill
We hope you don't see your shadow ‘cause we want to sing!
