This simple song builds listening skills, coordination, and self control. For fun, you can put down a piece of removable masking tape, winding it around the room. Instruct children to try to stay on the line. Or, if you have a carpet with a border, that can be your line. If you are outside, take your guitar or other instrument (could even be a tambourine or other rhythm instrument) and play and sing as you follow a path or marked shape on a playground. Look for lines and large circles in your environment, inside and out- even chalk on the playground, or a driveway. Ask the children to come up with ideas of where they could follow a line. And of course if you don’t have a line, just change the words to walk “in” a line. Problem solved!

TIP:  Let children know ahead of time that there will be silence (except for ticking sound),
and they are to freeze until next instructions are sung.

Walk On The Line

Walk on the line, come walk on the line
Can you walk on the line with me
Walk on the line ‘til the music stops
Walk on the line with me

Jump on the line, come jump on the line
Can you walk on the line with me
Jump on the line ‘til the music stops
Jump on the line with me

Slide on the line, come slide on the line
Can you slide on the line with me
Slide on the line ‘til the music stops
Slide on the line with me

Turn around on the line, turn around on the line
Turn around on the line with me
Turn around on the line ‘til the music stops
Turn around on the line with me

Dance on the line, come dance on the line dance
Can you dance on the line with me
Dance on the line ‘til the music stops
Dance on the line with me

Crawl on the line, come crawl on the line
Can you crawl on the line with me
Crawl on the line ‘til the music stops
Come crawl on the line with me
