Sometimes
the simplest songs are the most fun! I came up with this little
ditty for the 2013 National Summer Reading Theme, “Dig into
Reading.” My plan was to have a clear container of sand with
some small objects buried in it, and pull one out each time I
sing the song. But when I was first singing it I was in my
daughter’s living room watching my grandchildren (2 1/2 and 4
1/2). So I just picked up a random object within reach (like a
book, or a toy). The kids thought it was hilarious and pretty
soon we were taking turns “finding” anything and everything in
the room!
So when you do this song, take a tip from this Grandma- don’t
limit yourself to singing about things in a sandbox. Or going
the other direction, you could make this all about dinosaurs or
bones, or even digging animals. It can be as serious or silly as
you want. It can be a learning lesson or just a lot of fun.
And that is the beauty of a simple song!
Digging, Digging in the
Sandbox
I’m digging, digging, in the
sandbox,
Digging in the ground
(pretend to dig)
I’m digging, digging, in the sandbox,
Look what I just found
(pull something out of a box, or bag, or container of
sand)
Get creative and have
fun with this one and it can go on
and on and on…. !
