Eight Days
of Light
(from "A Season For
Singing" available on Tape and CD)
I wrote this song to help explain
Hanukkah to very young children. I sing it after giving a brief and simple
explanation of the story of Hanukkah. I use a small menorah, and actually
light the candles as the song is sung and as the lyrics indicate. The
children are spellbound by the lighting, and seem to sense the seriousness
of the occasion. If you are unclear about the story of Hanukkah, visit one
of these websites which give wonderful and simple explanations, as well as
more crafts and activities.

You may use a real menorah (there are inexpensive children’s ones), or make
one out of clay and birthday candles.
This song also works well for school music programs.
Eight days of Light
On the first day there was oil in the lamp, enough for just one night
But on the second day it was still giving light,
burning brightly through the night
On the third day it was still giving light,
burning brightly through the night
And on the fourth night it was still giving light
burning brightly through the night
On the fifth night it was still giving light,
burning brightly through the night
And on the sixth night it was still giving light
burning brightly through the night
On the seventh night it was still giving light
burning brightly through the night
And on the eighth night it was still giving light,
burning brightly through the night
Oh Hanukkah, oh Hanukkah, we celebrate the light you bring
Oh Hanukkah, oh Hanukkah to celebrate we will sing
One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight nights of light you bring.
