Summer is the time for insect songs, and I find children (and adults) often forget what makes an insect an insect. So I came up with this simple and very silly song to learn it, once and for all! The simple props make it memorable!

You’ll need a “gift box”, which can just be a simple box with a bow on it, or as I have, a top and bottom wrapped separately so the top can be lifted off each time you add a verse. Make the following simple shapes out of felt, cardboard, or card stock. You can click on this link to EnchantedLearning.com for some great insect parts diagrams to use for your patterns.

You can see instructions for making your own "insect" under the song lyrics.

The Gift (Insect Song)

On my birthday my brother gave an insect to me,
It had 3 parts to its body
(head, thorax, abdomen)

On my birthday my brother gave an insect to me,
It had 6 hairy legs and 3 parts to its body
(head, thorax, abdomen)

On my birthday my brother gave an insect to me,
It had 2 antennae, 6 hairy legs,
and 3 parts to its body
(head, thorax, abdomen)

On my birthday my brother gave an insect to me,
It had 4 fine wings, 2 antennae, 6 hairy legs
and 3 parts to its body
(head, thorax, abdomen)

On my brother's birthday
I gave the insect back to him,
It had 4 fine wings, 2 antennae, 6 hairy legs
and 3 parts to its body
(head, thorax, abdomen)

MAKE YOUR OWN INSECT:

bullet

Body (label with 1,2,3, to represent head, thorax, abdomen)

bullet

6 legs: pipe cleaners attached to a frame which fits over the body works well

bullet

2 antennae– again, pipe cleaners work well

bullet

4 fine wings: I run laminating plastic through the machine without any paper in it. This gives you a good stiff clear piece of plastic you can draw your wings on, and cut out.

Place small pieces of Velcro on each part, so you can lay one part on top of the next, as you “build” your insect. As you sing each part, point to it- especially the numbered parts of the body.

One child can be the “brother” and hold the box while you or another child opens it and takes the pieces out, and places them on the flannel board. This lends itself to great dramatics, as you gasp each time you reach into the box for another part!
