This song is designed to teach children about keeping their bodies in their “own space.” Talk to them about what elbow room means, and use this song to have them check to be sure they have elbow room when they sit down. Be sure your circle time space is large enough for them to have elbow room! I often large classrooms where the furniture placement doesn’t allow for this. And then we wonder why children bump each other!

Elbow Room

Fly on over to the circle and sit your body down
Flap your wings like a little bird
As you sit down on the ground
Give yourself a little elbow room, elbow room
A little room to move around
‘Cause everybody needs a little elbow room
When you sit your body down

Cross your legs in your own space
With your elbows out to the sides
Now flap your wings like the bird that sings
In the nest and in the skies
Do you have a little elbow room, elbow room
A little room to move around
‘Cause everybody needs a little elbow room
When you sit your body down

Yes everybody needs a little elbow room
When you sit your body down
